The island of Chiloé is located south of the city of Puerto Montt, at the beginning of the Carretera Austral, on the border with Patagonia. The houses are modest and very colourful, with facades covered with larch shingles and a pitched roof covered with corrugated sheets. In Castro, capital of the island, you can still see the last "palafitos", wooden houses built on stilts. These houses have a street-level entrance and a terrace which allows direct access to the boats moored on the canal.

L'isola di Chiloé si trova a sud della città di Puerto Montt, all'inizio della Carretera Austral, ai confini con la Patagonia. Le case sono modeste e molto colorate, con facciate rivestite con scandole di larice ed il tetto a spiovente ricoperto da lamiere ondulate. A Castro, capitale dell'isola, si possono ancora vedere gli ultimi "palafitos", case di legno costruite su palafitte. Queste abitazioni hanno l'ingresso a livello della strada e una terrazza che permette un accesso diretto alle barche ormeggiate sul canale.
